Batavia, Ohio. Starting in May 2008, the U.S. Department of the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million individuals nationwide. The Office of Adult, Child, and Family Stability (ACFS) of the Clermont County Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS) would like to draw your attention some important information about the payments.
"Individuals and families across Clermont County will benefit significantly from these payments," said ACFS Director Crystal Patrick. "However, those eligible must file a 2007 federal income tax return in order to receive them." The IRS will use the 2007 federal income tax return to determine eligibility and calculate the basic amount of the payments. In most cases, the payment will be $600 for individuals and $1,200 for taxpayers who file a joint return. Parents and anyone else eligible for a stimulus payment will also receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. There are some limitations based on income.
Low income workers who have earned income above $3,000, Social Security recipients, certain railroad retirees, and those who receive veterans’ disability compensation, pension, or survivors’ benefits must file a 2007 tax return to receive the stimulus payment. Individuals who pay no tax and who have less than $3,000 of qualifying income will not be eligible for the payment.
The economic stimulus payments will not count toward or negatively impact any other incomebased government benefits, such as Social Security, food stamps, or other programs. You may view the "IRS Fact Sheet" that provides all the details of the 2008 stimulus payments at www.IRS.gov. Additionally, citizens should explore eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit program; this program can save tax dollars for individuals and families with incomes below a certain level.
